Open Workshop Day on Awareness – 28th March 2020
Transformative justice and security beyond police and the justice system, community accountability, queer feminism, anti-racism, power of definition and self-defence, critical reflections on masculinity, mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion within safeR spaces…
Antisexist awareness work and the declarations of self-organized, radical left-wing spaces contain a multitude of arguments, reflections and the desire to position oneself, to act and to decisively oppose injuring behaviour. But how exactly?
For three years now, our working group has developed an awareness concept and taken care of its practical implementation at Solipartys in New Yorck in Bethanien. During this time we have learned a lot, but questions and uncertainties have also arisen. We believe that many people feel the same way. Our impression is that there is a great need for awareness concepts, exchanges of experience and joint discussions.
In order to explore some of these topics a little deeper, we are organising an open workshop day on the 28.03.2020 in New Yorck.
We understand awareness as an important political, (queer)feminist practice and would like to see a larger discussion on how to create safer spaces. Spaces, in which we try to break away from exisiting social relations, spaces in which we learn other ways to resolve conflicts and where those affected by discrimination can feel more safe and comfortable.
NewYorck in Bethanien is located on the first floor of the south wing. There is a barrier-free WC. The premises are also accessible via an elevator. To use the elevator (in the main building) you can register in advance by email at awarenet(at)riseup(.)net or spontaneously ring on the 28th on 0157 3673 1843.
DE/EN whispered translation will be offered. Please contact us if you have other language requests and we will do our best to organize it.
If you can translate, feel welcome to contact us at awarenet(at)riseup(.)net
The workshops are free of charge.
Around 2pm there will be food (vegan) for donation.

Awareness, an Introduction – Workshop from Queerbeat
Have you ever been asked to do, or ever thought about doing awareness? But then you thought “I can’t do that”, “I don’t have the right training for that”, “I wouldn’t know what to say in an awareness case” … etc.? This introductory workshop is designed to empower people or give them an introduction to the work. Workshop to join in / to discuss, there will be no lecture. Open to all genders/sexes. (Language: DE)
(Body) norms and spatial policies in collective spaces – Workshop from Oriel
As organizers of an event, many decisions have to be made. Starting with the general question of which space to use for an event, followed by practical questions such as how to structure the room: How can we make the place accessible? These practical decisions mean that people can participate, feel safe and comfortable and enjoy the events… or not. (Language: DE, for 10 – 15 participants)
Workshop facilitator: Oriel is a fabulous fat* white genderqueere femme. As an activist, performer and freelance adult educator she works on femme*hostility, fat*empowerment and physical self-determination. Oriel is particularly interested in an emotional approach and an intersectional perspective.
Flirting – Workshop from Joris
Question social ideas and find out how flirting can be (more) fun for you? Exchange, reflection and games are part of this workshop and you will probably come out with some new impulses.
Joris has been giving workshops on sexuality and consensus since 2009. (Language: DE)

Throw-out without using physical contact – Workshop from Queerbeat
Even in left collective spaces there are sometimes situations in which we cannot make progress with awareness work. But even when people do not want to leave, there are sometimes creative possibilities. In this workshop there is room to talk about good solutions and practically try them. Open for all who feel that they belong to FLINT. (Language: DE)
FLINT = Female/Lesbian/Inter/Non-binary/Trans
Justice beyond the state, police and prisons – Workshop von ignite! Workshopkollektiv
How can we deal with conflict and violence in our communities without relying on the patriarchal institutions of state justice and police?
How can we put our criticism of those institutions into practice? In our workshop we want to discuss with you what we need to be able to react to interpersonal violence in anti-authoritarian communities and in the long run end (patriarchal) violence for good. We don’t offer a master plan but a room for interaction and debate. (Language: DE)

Power of Definition – Workshop from Toni
In my workshop I want to give a short input on the concept of awareness and then expore the power of definition concept. The power of definition for an effected person is part of awareness concepts and thus an important basis for awareness work. I would like to discuss this basic principle with participants and clarify open questions together. How did the principle of power of definition come about and what is to be achieved through it? What are the obstacles and what should those applying this principle in their work pay attention to? There is no previous knowledge expected to participate in this workshop. (Language:DE)
Rave Awareness – Workshop from RaveAwareness
This workshop deals with questions of personal boundaries and discrimination and how we can create spaces in clubs where people feel more secure and comfortable. The same social power structures that permeate our society are present at our parties; this discussion will look at how respect for personal boundaries and freedom can come together whilst partying. (Language: EN)
